A promotional payout is not an order refund
A refund returns payment for a purchase under the applicable transaction and return terms. A promotional payout card delivers a separate benefit earned under an offer. One must not be presented as a substitute for the other.
Compare the customer promise
The distinction starts with why the customer receives value, not with whether both experiences happen after a purchase.

Consider a Shopify product promotion
A customer may qualify for a promotional payout on an eligible purchase. If that purchase is later returned, the order refund and the promotional benefit must be considered separately. The applicable terms determine whether the promotion's eligibility changes; this comparison does not create a deduction, clawback, or replacement-refund policy.
Choose language that prevents disputes
Use 'promotional benefit' when that is what is being delivered. Avoid labeling a card as a refund merely because it follows a purchase. Keep order-return instructions separate from card-use support so customers can reach the team responsible for their question.
