Payout programs

Make the customer benefit clear from the beginning

A payout card program connects a promotional benefit to an eligible Shopify purchase. Start with the offer the customer understands, then work backward to the decisions and delivery needed to fulfill it.

Choose the purpose before the process

A product campaign and a post-purchase promotion can both involve payout cards, but they do not answer the same business question. Define the purchase you want to encourage and why a separate promotional benefit is appropriate. A payout card is not a Shopify merchant payout or an alternative name for a refund.

Planning questionDecision to make
Why offer the benefit? One primary customer or commercial objective.
Who may receive it?An understandable qualification rule.
What happens after purchase?A decision point and a recipient delivery path.
How will the team know it worked?A completion measure and a separate business outcome.

Understand the choices in your program

Objectives and eligibility define the promise. Comparisons explain when a payout card differs from returning a payment or offering store credit. Campaign planning brings those decisions into a brief the merchant team can use.

Decide what the customer should expect

The storefront offer, later notifications, and support responses must agree about qualification and the next step. Card conditions belong with the card information, while the merchant remains responsible for explaining the purchase-related promotion. Neither delivery nor card usage by itself proves an increase in sales.

Plan for clear delivery

Plan a clear path from purchase to promotional payout.

Discuss the offer, customer expectations and the next program decision.
