Payout programs / objectives

Give the payout program one primary job

A program objective should describe a customer behavior or experience the merchant can observe, support, and measure through the Shopify journey.

Write an outcome, not a feature list

An objective such as supporting a qualifying post-purchase action is more useful than a list of card features. It provides a basis for deciding who qualifies, when delivery begins, and which result belongs in reporting.

Secondary benefits can be recorded, but they should not compete with the primary decision the program is designed to influence.

Connect the outcome to observable evidence

Identify the Shopify events and program records that show whether the intended journey occurred. Use evidence that is available consistently, not assumptions that require manual interpretation for every order.

  • A defined audience
  • A relevant Shopify event
  • A clear decision owner
  • A measurable outcome

Check the objective against the recipient promise

The internal goal and the public offer should be compatible. Customers should not need to understand the merchant metric, but they should be able to understand what action matters and what outcome to expect.

Plan for clear delivery

Connect the Shopify purchase to a responsible customer payout journey.

Bring the merchant objective, eligible purchase concept, recipient experience, and unresolved program dependencies.
